Best Savannah GA St. Patrick’s Day Tips

Looking for the best Savannah GA St. Patrick’s Day Tips? Here are tips from my own time in Savannah for St. Patrick’s Day.

Going to the Savannah GA St. Patrick’s Day celebration was so fun because Savannah, Georgia, is one of the top three places to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the United States.

Whether this popularity is due to the city’s cobblestone streets, its oak trees embellished with Spanish moss, or its open container laws, Savannah truly is a great place to celebrate this green holiday.

Check out my personal tips on how to make the best of St. Patrick’s Day weekend in Savannah, Georgia.

This post is part of the Hotel Planner Campaign.

Secure Accommodation for St. Patrick’s Day Weekend

Getting a hotel in Savannah as close to the riverfront as possible is important because that’s where the festivities happen. After a day of enjoying Savannah’s beautiful downtown and drinking in celebration, the last thing you’ll want to do is spend 30 to 45 minutes fighting other people for a cab.

Don’t make the same mistake that my girlfriends and I made last year, and find a hotel that’s within walking distance.

To make sure things go smoothly, book a hotel at least six months in advance. Since Savannah is so popular on St. Patrick’s Day, the hotels by the riverfront tend to fill up much further in advance than you’d think.

Drink Openly on the Streets

Savannah is one of the 11 places in the United States where you can drink openly in public, which adds to the fun on St. Patrick’s Day weekend. This comes with restrictions, though.

Any time of the year, you can carry and drink one alcoholic beverage of 16 ounces or less in an open plastic container within Savannah’s historic district. On St. Patrick’s Day weekend, you have to purchase a wristband for $5 each day when you plan to drink within the festival zone. You don’t need a wristband during the parade, though.

You can buy wristbands at 22 locations in the festival zone, so you’re bound to find one easily. If you drink without a wristband and you’re caught with an alcoholic beverage, then you’ll receive a fine of up to $67. Don’t risk losing the money that you can spend partying!

Enjoy the Party During the Day and at Night

Finishing off the Night on River Street

St. Patrick’s Day isn’t just about the parade. The holiday is about the surrounding days and nights, too. During the day, drink at Ellis, Franklin, or Johnson Square, which are all public spaces in the festival zone.

My girlfriends and I spent the day drinking in Ellis Square. It was a fun place to start the festivities, as the whole square was full of groups of friends and families celebrating and enjoying the warm, sunny day.

Once the sun starts going down, check out Rocks on the Roof for a cocktail and a spectacular view of the river. Then head to River Street, and hop in and out of every bar on the street. With the celebratory St. Patrick’s Day vibe permeating the air, any bar on River Street will have that crazy party you’re seeking.

Dress Up for the Occasion

This goes without saying, but wear green! Anything and everything bright and wacky goes, from green wigs to tutus. I’ve even seen people dye their beards green!

Now that you have the basic information on making the best of St. Patrick’s Day weekend, get your friends together and head to Savannah!

Thanks for stopping by! xo.

It's so interesting to me that some places are totally cool with drinking in public in the US -- and others are completely against it! Haha! I feel like I'm back in Korea again :D This sounds like a great place to celebrate St. Patrick's Day!

My wedding anniversary is St Patricks Day so we always love to go away somewhere to celebrate. We have done the States a few times and find it great fun. Savannah is on my list of places to visit but I cannot believe they charge you to drink outdoors when it is normally legal to do so. I guess that is how they recoup some of the money!
